R&D on four wheels — and a route into motorsport
AIDA's Nissan Skyline GT-R R33 is a demanding, visible and repeatable R&D platform for developing PUSH — and our entry into the motorsport and performance market.
The Skyline project began several years before PUSH had its name. The car was built from the ground up and upgraded from 2.6 to 2.8 litres with forged engine components, uprated turbos, fuel system, cooling and a programmable ECU.
After an extensive rebuild, a simple question arose: where is the system that tells you how the engine and drivetrain are actually doing? Modern engine management can show fault codes and engine data, but it does not necessarily give a continuous picture of vibration, changes in sound and mechanical development across the whole car. AIDA approached Nordic Semiconductor to explore what their technology platform could offer. That became part of the road to the first PUSH prototype.
The Skyline platform makes it possible to place sensors on the cylinder head and block, gearbox, propshaft, differential and chassis. Each location has its own signal pattern, and those signals change with engine speed, load, temperature, road surface and driving style. ECU data can be compared with the external measurements, so the system can examine how vibration, temperature and sound develop at different engine speeds, boost levels, loads and driving conditions.
A high-performance car produces rapid and pronounced variation. Temperatures can change quickly, load moves through the driveline, and the vibration picture is affected by engine, gearing, surface and speed alike. That challenges sensors, communication, power consumption and algorithms.
The findings cannot be transferred directly from a car to an offshore pump or generator. But the technical method can: capturing several signal types, synchronising against load, establishing a baseline and recognising change over time.
The car is therefore a platform — not the main product. Offshore, maritime operations and rotating industrial equipment remain the core. Motorsport is a development arena, a new market, and an effective way to show what the technology does.
